All of our pupils returned to school after the long weekend looking extremely smart in their summer uniforms, complete with their school blazers. Although it was a shorter four-day week, the children have still enjoyed a very full programme of activities, including a school trip and the launch of our whole-school charity Readathon, alongside plenty of engaging learning and fun together in the classroom.
Junior One and Form One Trip
Junior One has had a busy few days. Last Friday they went on a minibeast hunt in Hyde Park’s Rose Garden. With sunny skies, creepy crawlies were out in abundance. The children worked with Form One, who were studying plants in their science lessons, using their knowledge of minibeast microhabitats to find and observe creatures in the park. They had a whale of a time and behaved beautifully.
After the Bank Holiday, Junior One and Form One teamed up again for a visit to the Postal Museum. The children celebrated the 40th anniversary of the children’s book The Jolly Postman with an interactive lesson, a trip on the Mail Rail underground railway and practical play in a mini village where they took on the roles of postal workers, sorting and delivering mail. Highlights included sending messages through pneumatic tubes and learning about the history of sending letters.
Assembly and CHS Readathon
We are delighted to announce that the CHS Readathon was launched in today’s assembly and we hope every child will take part. Over the next three weeks, pupils will be encouraged to read as much and as often as possible while raising money for Read for Good’s hospital programme, helping to promote Reading for Pleasure across the school and at home, particularly in this “National Year of Reading” 2026. The Readathon runs from Monday 11th June to Sunday 31st May, with all donations to be returned by Monday 8th June. We ask parents to support their child by encouraging participation, helping them choose reading materials, tracking their reading, and finding sponsors among family and friends, with donations easily made via the QR code on sponsor cards or at readforgood.org/sponsor by selecting the school’s giving page.
Virtual Parent meeting with Mrs Hampton and Ms Galligan - Thursday 7 May
Ms Galligan joined Mrs Hampton for the second virtual coffee morning of the summer term on Thursday, sharing the RSE curriculum with our parent community, including the areas covered and how relationship and sex education is delivered at CHS. They also outlined recent curriculum changes to ensure pupils are best equipped to face modern life. These included puberty and personal hygiene, with a particular focus on emotional development and self-identity linked to self-image. Separate notes were sent yesterday along with the slides for any parents who were unable to attend the meeting. If any parent has further questions relating to this important element of our curriculum they should contact the school office in the first instance to arrange a one to one meeting with either Mrs Hampton or Ms Galligan.
