During assembly, the children reflected on how our school behaviour code promotes values and behaviours that are important throughout life. They learned about the upcoming Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games and explored how athletes must be hard-working and resilient to achieve their goals.

The children also discussed the importance of being cooperative, especially as part of a team, such as in bobsleigh and how kindness matters, whether you are a winner or a runner-up in any competition.

Finally, Ms Burke announced that this year’s Carnival Day theme will be the Winter Olympic Games!

Form Four British Museum Trip

Form Four set off to the British Museum on Wednesday to visit the Ancient Egypt galleries.  They spent time being history detectives in Room 61 looking for evidence about whether Ancient Egyptians listened to music, played with toys and games and about the variety of foods the Ancient Egyptians ate and farmed.   They looked carefully at the artefacts and the tomb paintings to come to their conclusions.  They sketched the Mummy cases and marvelled at the architecture of the museum itself. The day was rounded off with a visit to the Museum shop before a ride back on the top deck of a double decker.  We were pleased to receive compliments from the museum staff  on the children’s good manners.

Poetry Competition - Wednesday 11 February

The annual CHS Poetry Competition will take place in school on Wednesday 11 February. All pupils, from Junior One through to Form Six, will be given the opportunity to participate in the competition.

We are delighted to welcome Miss Gloria from Miss Daisy’s Nursery, along with Mr Robert Garvey, Headmaster of Wetherby Senior School, as our guest adjudicators for this year’s competition.

Miss Gloria will be judging pupils from Junior One to Form Two, listening to poems that the children in Form One and Two have written themselves as part of this term’s whole-school focus on poetry. Junior One will be reciting well known nursery rhymes with a focus on performance.

In the afternoon, Mrs Hampton will be joined by Mr Robert Garvey for an engaging and poetry-rich session with our Key Stage Two pupils, Forms Three to Six, who will be reciting a carefully chosen selection of poems spanning well-loved poets they have explored.

From each class, a number of pupils will be selected as Commended or Highly Commended and will be invited to perform their individual poems, together with their class choral poem, at our Poetry Recital for parents, which will take place at The Carisbrooke Hall on Friday 6 March at the earlier time of 1pm.

Parents are encouraged to support their children as they learn and practise their poems. Although any competition can recognise only a limited number of ‘winners’, our strong commitment to inclusivity means that every pupil’s effort and involvement will be recognised and celebrated.

Carnival Day - Friday 13th February

Carnival Day will take place on Friday 13th February.  The theme is the Winter Olympic Games. On this day, the children may come to school in a winter themed jumper or may choose to be dressed as a winter athlete or they could even come as an Olympic mascot, or celebrated (winter sports) athlete.

They will not have usual timetabled lessons on this day but instead work in small cross -year groups taking part in some science, design and technology and creative workshops over the course of the day.

Tatler School’s Guide

We are delighted to have been chosen once again for consideration in Tatler’s Schools Guide. As part of this, Tatler has invited a selection of pupils, parents, and staff to complete a short questionnaire.

We are very grateful to the parents who have already participated and we warmly invite any other members of our parent community who would like to support the school in this venture to contact the school office early next week.

While Tatler limits responses, we are also planning to refresh our school website in the coming months and may use some parent quotes (with your permission) to showcase our community.

Hats, gloves and scarves

Finally, a reminder that children should still come to school warmly dressed. While the school is well heated, we have noticed many icy cold fingers when we shake hands in the mornings.
